An integrated genomic analysis of lung cancer reveals loss of DUSP4 in EGFR-mutant tumors.
To address the biological heterogeneity of lung cancer, we studied 199 lung adenocarcinomas by integrating genome-wide data on copy number alterations and gene expression with full annotation for major known somatic mutations in this cancer. This showed non-random patterns of copy number alterations significantly linked to EGFR and KRAS mutation status and to distinct clinical outcomes, and led to the discovery of a striking association of EGFR mutations with underexpression of DUSP4, a gene within a broad region of frequent single-copy loss on 8p. DUSP4 is involved in negative feedback control of EGFR signaling, and we provide functional validation for its role as a growth suppressor in EGFR-mutant lung adenocarcinoma. DUSP4 loss also associates with p16/CDKN2A deletion and defines a distinct clinical subset of lung cancer patients. Another novel observation is that of a reciprocal relationship between EGFR and LKB1 mutations. These results highlight the power of integrated genomics to identify candidate driver genes within recurrent broad regions of copy number alteration and to delineate distinct oncogenetic pathways in genetically complex common epithelial cancers
Possible triplet superconductivity in MOSFETs
A theory that predicts a spin-triplet, even-parity superconducting ground
state in two-dimensional electron systems is re-analyzed in the light of recent
experiments showing a possible insulator-to-conductor transition in such
systems. It is shown that the observations are consistent with such an exotic
superconductivity mechanism, and predictions are made for experiments that
would further corroborate or refute this proposal.Comment: 4 pp., REVTeX, psfig, 1 eps fig, final version as publishe
Asymmetric Fermi superfluid in a harmonic trap
We consider a dilute two-component atomic fermion gas with unequal
populations in a harmonic trap potential using the mean field theory and the
local density approximation. We show that the system is phase separated into
concentric shells with the superfluid in the core surrounded by the normal
fermion gas in both the weak-coupling BCS side and near the Feshbach resonance.
In the strong-coupling BEC side, the composite bosons and left-over fermions
can be mixed. We calculate the cloud radii and compare axial density profiles
systemically for the BCS, near resonance and BEC regimes.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figure
Fluctuation Exchange Analysis of Superconductivity in the Standard Three-Band CuO2 Model
The fluctuation exchange, or FLEX, approximation for interacting electrons is
applied to study instabilities in the standard three-band model for CuO2 layers
in the high-temperature superconductors. Both intra-orbital and near-neigbor
Coulomb interactions are retained. The filling dependence of the d(x2-y2)
transition temperature is studied in both the "hole-doped" and "electron-doped"
regimes using parameters derived from constrained-occupancy density-functional
theory for La2CuO4. The agreement with experiment on the overdoped hole side of
the phase diagram is remarkably good, i.e., transitions emerge in the 40 K
range with no free parameters. In addition the importance of the "orbital
antiferromagnetic," or flux phase, charge density channel is emphasized for an
understanding of the underdoped regime.Comment: REVTex and PostScript, 31 pages, 26 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.

Quantum condensation in electron-hole bilayers with density imbalance
We study the two-dimensional spatially separated electron-hole system with
density imbalance at absolute zero temperature. By means of the mean-field
theory, we find that the Fulde-Ferrell state is fairly stabilized by the order
parameter mixing effect.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Nitrogen-Functionalized Graphene Nanoflakes (GNFs:N): Tunable Photoluminescence and Electronic Structures
This study investigates the strong photoluminescence (PL) and X-ray excited
optical luminescence observed in nitrogen-functionalized 2D graphene nanoflakes
(GNFs:N), which arise from the significantly enhanced density of states in the
region of {\pi} states and the gap between {\pi} and {\pi}* states. The
increase in the number of the sp2 clusters in the form of pyridine-like N-C,
graphite-N-like, and the C=O bonding and the resonant energy transfer from the
N and O atoms to the sp2 clusters were found to be responsible for the blue
shift and the enhancement of the main PL emission feature. The enhanced PL is
strongly related to the induced changes of the electronic structures and
bonding properties, which were revealed by the X-ray absorption near-edge
structure, X-ray emission spectroscopy, and resonance inelastic X-ray
scattering. The study demonstrates that PL emission can be tailored through
appropriate tuning of the nitrogen and oxygen contents in GNFs and pave the way
for new optoelectronic devices.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures (including toc figure
